The second this album came, so did i. i put this bad boy on my record player an was immediately given the new mark 6 bolter, green skins and filthy xenos came out of the woodwork demanding retribution. only barely survived such incredible heresy By initiating exterminatus, at this time a rip into the warp appeared, soldiers of karn decended upon thee. with my codex astartes i stood strong, cpt titus of the ultra marines arrived, he unlocked his cod piece. i new what must be done. only in death, does service end.
In 1988, England seemed to be the world's absolute epicenter for extreme music. Bands such as Carcass, Sore Throat, and Intense Degree would all issue their Vinyl debuts in the U.K. during that exciting year. These bands' musical platforms were so cutting edge at the time that there was no concrete way to describe their revolutionary sounds, with terms ranging from death Metal (maybe with the exception of Intense Degree, who were more rooted in traditional hardcore), grindcore, extreme thrash and even the more generic tag of 'Britcore' that someone coined back then.
Enter Coventry's Bolt Thrower, who issued their debut 'In Battle there is no Law' on Vinyl Solution in June of '88.
Funny, i First reviewed this one roughly a year ago and gave It 3 1/2 stars at the time as a First impression kind of review. After receiving some negative feedback for the review and a user comment all disagreeing with me, i was forced to listen to It again tonight (July 24, 2011) and reassess my thoughts.
At the time i was somewhat put off By what on First appearance seems to be the semi-'sloppiness' in the playing. Now, when i hear It more and more, i realize that this just comes from the band's and their contemporaries' roots in the U.K. anarcho-punk scene and in fact only adds a certain gritty D.I.Y. charm to the whole thing. i have similar feelings about Carcass's debut 'Reek of Putrefaction,' which incidentally was issued at almost the exact same time as Bolt Thrower's debut.
I like my Underground music, and especially death metal, raw, dirty and having a homemade uniqueness. the basement level production of 'In Battle there is no Law' is remarkably powerful for a recording that was probably done very cheaply. and Karl Willets' vocals, which sometimes alternate between guttural and brutal (making him one of the absolute originators of this style) and a more clean crust-ish yell, contain some truly memorable lines that ingrain themselves in the listener's consciousness. Female band member Jo Bench's bass is phenomenal and has a truly ominous buzzsaw quality throughout. Guitarists Barry Thompson and Gavin Ward craft some very catchy thrashy riffs that just pummel. and I've gotten a lot more Used to the performance here of the band member that before i thought was the biggest culprit, drummer Andy Whale. even if he's not as absolutely light speed as Carcass's Ken Owen or Sore Throat's Hammy, i now find his short, more mid-paced snare blasts appropriately devastating.
All in all, I've come full circle and now see the true value of this classic recording. and unlike what i said a year ago, It may actually be my favorite Bolt Thrower LP of all simply because It is so D.I.Y. and unpolished in nature and therefore the band's most unique and truest to their original vision. Highly recommended for early death Metal and crust aficionados alike.
